Ibadan centre sues for smooth staff-student relation

The Director, Ibadan Study Centre, Prof. Mercy Ogunsola-Bandele, has identified humility on the part of students, patience from members of staff and mutual respect as the sine qua non for a smooth staff-student relationship.

Bandele, who stated this at a Students' Forum organised by the centre to enable students bare their minds on matters affecting them, said friction between staff and students was as a result of lack of mutual respect for each other.

She explained that mutual respect was necessary in a customer-centric institution such as NOUN, adding that an ODL system requires constant interaction between students and staff.

The forum, which was the first to be held since assumption of duty of Prof. Bandele as director, treated vexed issues which include- lateness in starting exams, non-availability of course materials, missing results, discrepancies in e-wallet balance, poor dissemination of information among other issues.

While allaying their fears on the issues, Bandele explained that the Management of the University, was fully aware of these vexed issues and was already working to get them solved.

She said some of the problems were caused by students themselves, citing missing results as one major palava, which findings had shown that it was often caused by students themselves.

Bandele accused students of writing illegibly, incorrect matric number and not writing on the specified answer sheets, as each faculty now have a colour assigned to it for ease of marking and identification.

She enjoined the students to be circumspect in handling matters that could cause avoidable delay for them.

Other members of staff took turns to clarify issues pertaining to their respective units.

Mrs Olufunmilayo  Adeoye, a Principal Assistant Registrar, urged the students to abide by the rules and regulations set by the centre.

One of such rules was the dress code, which, Adeoye said, could not be compromised. She cited cases of indecent dressing among students and cautioned that the management of the centre would not hesitate to descend heavily on students who flouted the directive.

Students were urged to form the habit of checking their portal regularly for information that would be useful to them.
